Shadows Photo Printing, a family-run Australian photo lab, sought to transform their manual ordering process into a seamless, digital-first experience. Known for handcrafted quality and professional-grade prints, the business needed a platform that could match their craftsmanship with a robust online ordering system capable of handling high-resolution images, custom sizes, and dynamic pricing—while maintaining a personalized feel.

Challenging Part

The major challenge was to digitize the trust and expert guidance Shadows is known for offline. Their previous setup was partially manual, difficult to scale, and caused friction for users uploading large image files or requesting custom print sizes. Common customer complaints included upload failures, unclear product options, and no real-time file validation—leading to order issues and delays.

Solution

Avology began with a deep-dive into Shadows’ workflow, analyzing everything from how customers uploaded images to how staff verified print quality. We then rebuilt the entire platform on Laravel with precision and automation in mind.

• Custom Order Builder: Developed a flexible system for selecting sizes, materials, and finishes, with dynamic pricing that adjusted in real time.

• Image Upload Optimization: Built a chunked upload system to handle large files without timeouts or corruption.

• DPI & Format Validation: Integrated backend logic to detect low-resolution images or incompatible color profiles (e.g., CMYK vs. sRGB).

• Mobile-Optimized Frontend: Designed with photographers and scrapbookers in mind—fast loading, simple layout, and image previews built with Blade and Tailwind CSS.

• Education & Guidance: Included tooltips, a "Fun Facts" print prep guide, and cropping visualization to reduce reprint issues.

• Automated Workflow: Orders are tagged for review or approval based on file health, helping staff focus only where needed.
